Live Review: Ride Midnight Pool Party's creative wave on their fluid 'Motions' EP

15 May 2019 | 5:53 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Sydney duo MIDNIGHT POOL PARTY have spent the better part of the last few months giving us tastes of their second EP, Motions. They gave us three singles in the disco-pop of 'Slow Down', slow-burning, emotive funk on 'With You' and the EP's closer, 'Stand A Chance'. These singles all have MPP's classic groove weaved into the DNA of them, each one a refreshing take on the group's signature sound.

With the release of the EP, also comes the addition of two previously unheard tracks in 'Slide' and 'Secret'.

'Slide' takes on more of an RnB feel, the vocals taking centre-stage and the production slowly forming the foundations for what eventuates into one smooth chorus that softly sweeps you away. It's a slow-burner, each production choice contributing to the track's epic final moments.

'Secret' brings the funk to the fore, that Jamiroquai-esque guitar really evoking the nostalgic feel the MPP boys are excellent at drenching their sound in.

The EP is ultimately a showcasing of the group's evolution; tighter sounds, tighter songwriting and an overall sense of self-realisation that rings true through every track. Drawing from sounds from all over and from various timelines, MPP said of the EP:

"We’ve been known to create disco/funk-esque music and wanted to make sure this still carried through our EP because we’ve always been inspired and influenced by different era’s, from 70’s like Chic, to the 90’s of Jamiroquai & Daft Punk. We’re also inspired by a lot of current Australian producers like Touch Sensitive, Luke Million, Cosmos Midnight to name a few, but in saying that we are both eclectic in our individual musical tastes so you can hear some elements of rock and hip hop in some of these tracks."
