Peruvian artist Sofia Kourtesis has announced a brand new EP is on the way, due for release in March, and has shared a new single to celebrate.
Berlin-based Peruvian artist Sofia Kourtesis has announced a forthcoming new EP titled Fresia Magdalena is set to be released next month on March 19th. Set for release on Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour (home to DJ Boring, Peggy Gou, Octo Octa and more), alongside this news, she's also shared a beautiful new single titled 'La Perla'.
Sampling her own voice for the first time, 'La Perla' is a steadily building, percussive led kaleidoscope of shifting drum patterns, echoing vocal loops and gentle synths to carry the song's gorgeous melodies and harmonies. It builds upon itself with Kourtesis carefully adding more and more to the controlled fray as it snakes along, blooming and swelling into a textured, emotive and warm moment before its expertly pulled right back before its end. Showing a slightly different direction for the producer, 'La Perla' is simultaneously low key and meditative while still uplifting as it hooks you in from the very start, and showcases why Sofia Kourtesis remains an artist to watch in the global electronic scene.
In a statement, Kourtesis said, "Although I’ve sampled my own voice before, this is the first time I’ve really sung on a track. My dream is to develop a live show and I created ‘La Perla’ with that in mind."
"‘La Perla’ is about staring at the sea, It's the first thing I’ll do when I return to Peru. My dad used to say staring at the sea is like meditation, it clears your head. This song is for him. It's hard for me to listen to 'La Perla' as it wrote it during a time I lost my dad to leukaemia. This song is for him, descansa en paz papa..."
