Live Review: 'Get Low' with upsidedownhead's woozy electronica ft. Ric Rufio

Just signed to Liberation Records, Sydney producer upsidedownhead has dropped a fascinating debut of experimental electronica with 'Get Low' ft. Ric Rufio.

With the exciting news that he's signed to Liberation Records, Sydney producer upsidedownhead has treated us to a massive electronic track called 'Get Low', co-written and featuring throwback RnB dreamboat RIC RUFIO. It's the first taste of an upcoming seven-track EP.

upsidedownhead (aka Ross James) is all about wonky and brooding electronica, exploring a fascination with broken sounds and out of tune melodies. He's worked with a huge range of artists like Daniel Johns, E^ST, Wafia and Chet Faker. 'Get Low' is his fist single as upsidedownhead, and like the rest of his EP was entirely performed, recorded and mixed by him, with bits and pieces being done in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles and Chicago.

As a debut, 'Get Low' is mysteriously promising. Channelling experimental electronica greats like BurialThom Yorke and Four Tet yet weaving in a personal touch, upsidedownhead tells a story of remaining calm through the panic of life. Crisp beats boom and warbled synth arpeggios swell among layers of Ric Rufio's warped vocals, layers of samples rising and falling away until a crescendo unleashes one hell of a climax. With masterful control upsidedownhead evokes statuesque calmness in the face of calamity, and it's captivating as it is catchy.

With an intriguing obsession with MS-DOS and broken electronica, upsidedownhead has certainly grabbed my attention. 'Get Low' shows finesse in weaving melancholic vibes through wonky electronica, and as a taste of what's to come it absolutely excels. If you're a fan of melancholic experimental electronica, this is definitely a name to keep your eye on.
